Rev. Norman Mitchell served as the founding pastor of Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church in Seattle, where he was officially installed in March 1946 after suggesting the congregation’s name. Throughout his tenure, he oversaw a period of rapid institutional growth that led the church to purchase its own permanent sanctuary in 1949 and eventually clear its mortgage by 1962. His leadership transformed the church into a vital anchor for Seattle’s Central District, emphasizing both spiritual guidance and community evangelism. In 1998, his civic contributions were permanently recognized through the naming of Norman Mitchell Manor, a 22-unit affordable housing community dedicated to serving seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Today, his enduring influence continues to shape the mission of the GD Association as it provides essential housing and stability to vulnerable residents in his honor.
